There are limited situations where a reasonable non-competition agreement may be valid in California. Starting in 2017, Illinois has banned non-compete bans on employees earning less than $13 an hour.   The majority of the United States recognizes and enforces different forms of non-competition agreements. Some states, such as California, Montana, North Dakota and Oklahoma, prohibit non-compete agreements for employees or prohibit non-competition clauses, except in limited cases.  This is why non-competition bans are popular with companies working in states where they are licensed.
